[ 19.02.2009 | 10:37pm ] |
Happy belated 2009. The year has sucked on numerous levels so far for everyone around me. Strange and even unpleasant things keep happening. Koshi's childhood best friend's dad died, 2 friends laid off so far that I know about, 2 coworkers making ER visits, friend broke a hip falling off his bike, and the list goes on.
But one good thing has happened so far: I got into grad school. Still waiting to hear from Columbia but I don't really care that much if I get in at this point (Berkeley was my 1st choice) unless they decide to give me a free ride + spending money + a nice apartment in the city. Since that's not going to happen, it looks like I'll be starting classes at Berkeley on August 26. Joy of joys.
Er what else. Got a road bike that I love. Four weddings this year, most of them in the fall. I don't know. Anyway. Just saying hello.

Hi. I stopped logging into LJ altogether because the crashiness was driving me insane. Hope you are all well.

Yesterday, after commenting his status message about it being a banner year for pics of sad traders, Chris (formerly greaterthanzero) set up a Tumblr blog called Sad Guys on Trading Floors and we began posting pics of sad guys on trading floors. Thanks to a BoingBoing post from Pesco, it's kind of taken off. The Telegraph mentioned it in a blog post and so did Silicon Valley Insider (apparently I do something in publishing in San Francisco).
It's so funny how the Internet works.
Update: I love MeFi but unfortunately they do not feel the same about the captions. Oh wells.

From the San Francisco Chronicle via Jason the Scientist:
And finally: First, the big new Federal Building in San Francisco was late and over budget. Then workers complained about needing sunglasses and umbrellas indoors to shield them from the glaring sun.
Now comes word about another bit of embarrassment at the $144 million "green" behemoth at Seventh and Mission streets.
Officials recently installed four giant, stainless-steel plaques near the entryway in recognition of the many planners, architects and others who helped make the eco-friendly building possible.
Only it wasn't long before office workers were making pilgrimages to the wall - and snickering at the engraved name of one "Hugh G. Rection."
That plaque is now gone. Of course, so are all the others, temporarily - seems they were installed crooked.

Hello LiveJournal. I apologize for my neglect. Thank you for the birthday wishes. Birthday was fun. South Africa was incredible. Big Sur the weekend after my bday was also incredible. Hurray for Dave Berman!
With the standardized testing out of the way, now I get to begin writing all the wonderful essays for grad school apps. Joyous. The next 2 months are going to annoy me.

| Writer's Block: How I got on LJ |
[ 19.06.2008 | 12:27pm ] |
The summer before my senior year of college, sheenabizarre started working at the booze cruise company for which I also worked in NYC. I don't remember exactly why she suggested I start one, but she did and I took her suggestion. The rest is history. I've met a lot of great people through LJ and am not ashamed to admit it.

| New York, I am coming to see you. |
[ 21.05.2008 | 01:50pm ] |
I dunno who's left in NYC (Eric????) but I will be there from May 31 – June 6. Koshi and I are staying in Park Slope with a friend but reckon we will spend a great deal of time pounding around my old haunts. Phone numbers are key for meeting up if you are interested... email me or send me a Facebook mesage (seriously, sorry).
[It is going to be wicked depressing when nobody responds.]

Back in Hawaii via the Continental Resort Shuttle aka Wayback Machine. We left Tokyo at 8:30pm on Thursday, 12/27 and got into Honolulu at 8:30am Thursday, 12/27. Gaining an extra day of vacation is pretty sweet, except everyone else is konked out and snoozing in various rooms of the house. That's not so bad though. It's nice to have sit-around-doing-nothing alone time. I'm watching a Dirty Jobs marathon on the Koshis' big TV.
girlracer, I looked in every single shop in Japan with Hello Kitty stuff for your earplugs—and believe me, that's pretty much every other shop in Japan—but I couldn't find any, not even at the airport. Sorry. It was a fun mission though!
Leaving Japan was very sad. Koshi and I have begun thinking of ways that we can live in or around Tokyo for a year or so...

Dear Jessica:
The item listed below is not yet available to be shipped. We expect to ship it within the next 1-2 weeks. We will ship the item sooner if it becomes available.
CRY CRY CRY CRY CRY CRY CRY CRY CRY CRY CRY
The site said "Ships in 1-2 days" yesterday when I ordered. Thanks to their awesome "take all the orders and let people think they're going to get it and then match the orders to the actual inventory at the end of the day and screw people" system, I am not getting Rock Band this week it seems.

[ 26.11.2007 | 02:04pm ] |
I played Rock Band on Saturday. I love it. A lot. I currently have an XBox 360 Pro, Rock Band, and Beautiful Katamari sitting in a bestbuy.com shopping cart. ~$600.
Should I click Check Out and go for it?
I can't do polls anymore because I refuse to pay LJ money, but your input is appreciated in the form of a comment saying "yes" or "no."
I did it. With the exception of plane tickets, this is more money than I've spent on anything at one time. I think. Retail purchases anyhow.

| Four and counting. |
[ 21.11.2007 | 06:08pm ] |
This is my fourth Thanksgiving away from home. Odd. Those four years flew by pretty damn fast. December 3 will also be my 4th anniversary of living in the Bay Area. Wild.

I am making the usual sweet potatoes and, for the first time ever, cranberry sauce. I found a baked cranberry sauce recipe on the Food Network's website. Seems easy enough and involves bourbon so I'm psyched. I might make spinach with bacon dressing but I dunno how ambitious I am. I feel like we are going to be low on vegetables, though, so maybe I should.

We went to the Swearing Festival at Edinburgh Castle last night. It started off well but avalanched into a really terribly boring and awful thing so we left and went to hang out with Carl the Drunk Bartender at Ha-Ra. That was fun. Then to Seth's house for late night fun that didn't end until 3 or something ridiculous. Spent another Sunday sleeping. Now we're going to go see the Joe Strummer documentary.

| Toys |
[ 08.11.2007 | 08:42am ] |
Lead paint toy recalls blah blah blah, but this one is nuts: GHB toys!
"GHB is this drug that in low doses actually causes euphoria," said Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNN's chief medical correspondent. "In higher doses, it can cause people to go into a coma. It can cause seizures. It can cause something known as hypotonia, where all your muscles just become very flaccid.
"And it can cause people to become amnestic, ... which is why it became a date-rape drug," Gupta said.
"So this is nasty stuff, and it appears that the chemical is actually converting into it in the body." After the last big recall I saw this lady who chairs some board that is supposed to be testing the safety of Chinese imports. She is a complete moron who has never heard of the term "accountability" but is very familiar with "pass the buck." I wonder what they'll send us via toys next!

| More Gama-Go |
[ 07.11.2007 | 11:22am ] |
While I was at Gama-Go last week, I also modeled the BoingBoing hoodie. Pesco blogged it today: Boing Boing hoodie by GAMA-GO!
Yes, it's $120 for a hoodie. But it's an art hoodie, and Kid Robot charges much more for their hoodies. I'd be happy to argue that the BB hoodie is far superior. The way the thing is put together is awesome and it's really warm and comfy. But art hoodies are obviously not for everyone and even the phrase "art hoodie" makes people cringe. Why can't art be wearable? Especially in hoodie form, since hoodies are wonderful, comfortable things you get attached to and wear all the time?

We went to Open Studios at the Hunter's Point Navy Shipyard yesterday. The shipyard is now an artist's colony. 85% of it is shit, but that 15% of not shit includes Pep Ventosa. Koshi bought a small Pep print and then we went back and he bought a huge one. We also came across an awesome chick with an Airstream trailer: Silver Trailer. I bought some earrings. They're sweet. I also drank a lot of free wine.

| I may be coming around on Halloween. |
[ 01.11.2007 | 12:47pm ] |
Last night was fun. Manned a checkpoint in the Presidio for a Halloween race, saw Stow Lake looking scarier than I've ever seen it (THE FOG!), drank beers, went to a party after everyone else had left, and ate a ton of leftovers out of the fridge when we got home.
Favorite costume of the night: purple people eater. But seeing Jesus sitting at the bar was also pretty great.
zyzzyva23, that was me wearing brown fake leather pants and red lipstick riding up Church St as you crossed 14th (I think) who said hi to you.
The cops were fucking annoying though. They walked into Gestalt 6 deep in some ridiculous display of copdom.
